Owen Wilson May Take Admission
He's close to Paul Weitz' filmSince finishing up work on Robert De Niro/Paul Dano drama Being Flynn, Paul Weitz has been busy trying to set up his next project, novel adaptation Admission. Back in January 2011, it looked like Tina Fey might be getting ready to star, and while she's still not locked in, Vulture reports that Owen Wilson is also close to jumping aboard.Admission was adapted from Jean Hanff Korelitz' novel and follows posh college admissions officer Portia Nathan (the part Fey is considering). When she falls for a 17-year-old likely student with plenty of rough edges, it starts to unravel her personal, professional and romantic life.Assuming he signs on, Wilson would play a teacher at a local high school that also falls for the fetching administrator.Weitz has a script from Karen Croner in hand, but no solid deals are quite in place yet. Should he land both Fey and Wilson (whose career is on a healthy upswing thanks to Midnight In Paris), he'll want to get the thing in front of cameras this June, when Fey hits hiatus from 30 Rock.

CG Monsters, Villains Star in Slightly More Coherent Wrath of the Titans Trailer
Forget John Carter's controversial budget woes and terrible tracking for a minute; Wrath of the Titans has been threatening to be the first big biff of 2012 since it was announced, thanks largely to its poorly received predecessor, Clash of the Titans. The sequel's initial Marilyn Manson-themed trailer didn't help, either, but Warner Bros. have thankfully tightened things (and stopped lingering on Sam Worthington's Kenny Powers 'do) for a new trailer that actually promises some fantastic CG creature work. Bring on the lava monster thingy! Wrath of the Titans picks up ten years after the events of Clash, with Perseus (Worthington) tapped once again by Zeus to save the world, this time from the nefarious Titans and Olympian plotters we glimpsed in Immortals. (Thanks for that primer, Tarsem!) This time around Rosamund Pike is along for the ride as the warrior queen Andromeda, as well as folks like Toby Kebbell and Bill Nighy. This trailer tightens things up a bit, explaining the set up (Liam Neeson's Zeus is under attack!) and packing a ton of CG creature looks into the span of a minute and a half. Honestly, that's shaping up to be the draw of this Jonathan Liebesman-helmed sequel. All I want to see is some believable lava smoke monster giant action. The movies never get those guys quite right. Wrath of the Titans will debut March 30. [via ComingSoon]

Humor and science mix in 3D pic
A film that mixes fact and fable to humorously tell the story of two 19th century scientists may not sound like the stuff of 3D film these days. But Teuton filmmakers (think Werner Herzog's "The Cave of Forgotten Dreams" and Wim Wenders' Oscar-nommed "Pina") have been at the vanguard of re-imagining the use of the format, exploring a new sense of space that might be seen as first steps in the use of the technology as part of a more intimate style of storytelling. German director Detlev Buck, who has enjoyed B.O. success with his latest comedy "Rubbeldiekatz" (Woman in Love), has just wrapped the biggest project of his career: a film based on the international bestselling novel "Measuring the World" -- shot in 3D. The novel, by Austrian writer Daniel Kehlmann, focuses on scientists Alexander von Humboldt, the explorer and world traveler, and Carl Friedrich Gauss, the mathematician who experienced the world through formulas and figures. According to Kehlmann, "It's about two people driven by curiosity who understand the world in very different ways." At the same time, the author says his book was never meant as a serious novel, and calls it "a comedy about German-ness and German history." For producer Claus Boje, the 3D in "Measuring the World" draws the viewer deeper into the story. "You want to see more," he says. Buck describes his film as "a double biography, playing one life against the other," with elements of science fiction, in which 3D is used to create a physical space contrasting the cramped internal world of Gauss in pre-industrial Europe with the breadth of Humbolt's journey to the jungles of Ecuador. The pic's 11 million ($14.5 million) budget may seem modest for a historical costume picture shot in 3D on two continents, but the sum reps major coin for a German-language pic. Boje believes the book's success (2 million copies sold in Germany alone; translations into 55 languages) will deliver the audience. Momentum from "Rubbeldiekatz should also help. The film's production company, Boje Buck, had to hit up a long list of sources for coin, including six TV stations, four regional subsidy funds and five federal funds from both Germany and Austria. Austrian co-production partner Lotus Films brought in 20% of the financing. Helmer Buck says that while the 3D component did not make it significantly easier to raise the money, in the end, it increased the budget by only 15%. The tight budget was made workable by an even tighter shooting schedule of 31 days, using multiple cameras shooting several angles simultaneously to cut down on setup time. This meant having two to three big 3D rigs, with up to four small 3D cameras mounted in different parts of the set -- a technique cameraman Slawomir Idziak ("Black Hawk Down," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") used on his first 3D film, the Polish WWI epic "Battle of Warsaw 1920." "But genre-wise, a movie like this is much closer to my heart," says Idziak, who also worked on two of Buck's earlier movies as well as with Krzysztof Kieslowski on "A Short Film About Killing" and "Three Colors: Blue." While Buck appreciates 3D asa crowd pleaser, he adds, "you shouldn't be too much in awe of 3D. We still need to give the audience an emotional entry." "Measuring the World" will open in October. Sundance Today: Peter Jackson, Elijah Wood And More
There are few good reasons to be at Newark airport at 4AM on a Thursday morning. One of those good reasons: flying out to the Sundance Film Festival, which kicked off in earnest this week. The MTV Movies team is on the ground in Park City, Utah, to talk to your favorite stars and get the inside scoop on what's sure to be some of the hottest indie projects of the coming months. Getting here was not easy. Refer back to the aforementioned 4AM role call at Newark. (Admittedly, I was the only one on the team who showed up that early for a 7AM flight, but leave me alone I get nervous). We rolled in at approximately 10AM mountain time and waited an additional two hours before we could even leave the airport. (We'll spare you the details.) Bellies were empty, tempers were hot, and naps were not in our immediate future. In short, a recipe for conflict. But if there's anything the Movies team excels at, it's conflict resolution especially where barbecue from Bandits is involved. (Deputy managing editor Eric Ditzian swears by the tri-tip steak sandwich, while managing editor and correspondent Josh Horowitz has probably had enough barbecue chicken salad to last him eight lifetimes.) Voracious BBQ consumption aside, we're also here at Sundance to chat up some of your favorite actors and filmmakers. Today's our first full day of interviews, and the lineup does not disappoint. Up first is "Hobbit" director Peter Jackson, who is taking a break from Middle-earth to come to Park City in support of his powerful documentary "West of Memphis." We're also chatting with Andy Samberg, Rashida Jones, Emma Roberts and Elijah Wood, all starring together in the dramedy "Celeste and Jesse Forever," making its grand debut here at Sundance. Throw "Wish You Were Here" hotties Teresa Palmer and Joel Edgerton into the mix, and it's safe to say that today's lineup of interviews is more than a little bit stacked. We'll keep you posted with more tweets, photos, blogs and news scoops than you can handle, so make sure to tune in right here as the MTV Movies team continues to watch (and eat) our way through Sundance.

8 Things We Learned From Fox's Comedy Panel: Zooey Deschanel, Megan Mullally and Raising Hope
Zooey Deschanel, New Girl and Christian Slater, Breaking In Be careful about your back, Zooey Deschanel. You have some serious competition. "I am adorkable," Megan Mullally introduced to reporters at Fox's winter TV previews Sunday."You will see two." The Emmy champion may be the latest accessory for Fox's comedy slate like a new series regular on Breaking In, which returns for any second season in March rigtht after, you suspected it, New Girl. Mullally was became a member of around the panel by co-star Christian Slater, Deschanel and New Girl creator Liz Meriwether and Raising Hope's Martha Plimpton and Garrett Dillahunt with creator Greg Garcia. Funny group, right? Listed here are the 8 most significant (and amusing) things they stated: 1. It's really no coincidence that Zooey and Emily Deschanel are generally around the Fox Network. When requested what cereal she ate becoming an adult, Deschanel clarified (the made-up) Fox cereal, with "like, little foxes." Breakfast of (Hollywood) champions! 2. Talking about Emily... Deschanel stated that they "worships" her large sister, "although not inside a strange way." She then joked that her trailer is wallpapered with pictures of Emily. Healthy! 3. Don't tick off Martha Plimpton! Following a reporter stated in her own question that Raising Hope "were built with a slow start," Plimpton required exception and mocked the reporter because of not getting her details straight. "Don't request Plimpton anything - she'll bite your mind off," she later stated. 4. Christian Slater really loves favorite anecdotes. Slater in comparison his newest career moves - he starred on NBC's My Very Own Worst Enemy and ABC's The Forgotten - to Goldilocks fitting different systems rather than different beds. After choosing the best fit at Fox, he attempted to stay tolerant of Breaking In, even though Fox didn't immediately renew it. "It's like when Tinkerbell was dying and Peter Pan was saying, 'Do you think in fairies?'" "It's like, 'I do believe I do think!AInch 5. Zooey Deschanel really loves Ough Gervais. The Golden Globe-nominated actress is most likely the only real celebrity attending who's wishing to obtain roasting by brutal coming back host Ough Gervais. "I worship Ough Gervais," she stated. "Him insulting me is prefer compliment I will get.Inch 6. Megan Mullally includes a very strict" work ethic. When requested about her Breaking In character, the brand new boss Ronnie, Mullally accepted that they only understood a lot since she'd just began shooting Saturday. "I simply drawn it out of my a-- yesterday morning," she stated having a laugh. "Reached the set and thought,' I gotta think about something.'" 7. Girl's aren't the only real ones who choose seeing Schmidt (Max Greenfield) naked: Garcia's boy, for just one, thinks New Girl is "easily the funniest show on tvInch - a proclamation that did not sit well together with his TV producer father. "Okay, to begin with, f--- you," Garcia amusingly recalls telling the 11-year-old. Particularly, Garcia states his boy thinks Schmdit's small hard nips are amusing. Use that what you should. 8. Approaching on the special episode of Breaking In... Dillahunt states he does not miss playing the challenging guy. "I do not understand stars who don't wish to appear weak onscreen," he stated having a laugh. "Everything raping and killing is tiring," his on-screen wife joked.

Where film is a risky biz
'Miss Bala''A Separation''Rumble of the Stones''Elite Squad''Black Bread'This year's crop of 63 foreign-language Oscar entries runs the gamut of themes from family dramas and dark comedies to biopics and even dance. But a good number deal with challenging and painful national issues of poverty, war, corruption and the drug trade. They are gritty, no-holds-barred accounts that have sparked local debate and, in some cases, endangered the welfare of its filmmakers, cast and crew while on location. Others have parried government wrath by the sheer heft of their popular appeal.Mexican entry "Miss Bala," by Gerardo Naranjo, centers on the harsh realities of drug cartels and their grip on beauty pageants and the young girls competing for the crown. While filming in Tijuana, the cast and crew were warned by drug traffickers not to stage any shootouts in the border town."We had to move these scenes to Aguas Calientes and had police protection," says Naranjo, who also had to contend with a miniscule budget of less than $2 million, which meant single takes for the shootouts. "We rehearsed for four months, shooting in video first to frame the shots and position our actors for each take," he says.Upon its release, "Miss Bala" polarized opinion in Mexico, with some accusing Naranjo of exploiting the country's current plight while others embraced the pic for shedding more light on the issue of rampant drug crime."At the end of the day, the negative comments spurred people to see it, and our box-office takings exceeded our expectations," says Naranjo, who adds that they were able to recoup their investment through the local box office alone.Venezuelan helmer/scribe Alejandro Bellame had a similar experience when shooting "Rumble of the Stones," which trumped two other pics to rep Venezuela in the foreign language Oscar race. Set in a rough neighborhood, pic focuses on a mother desperate to save her young sons from falling into the clutches of gangs.A candid portrayal of Venezuela's problems with rampant crime and grinding poverty, "Rumble" also engaged public debate. Some government opposition groups assailed it for being too soft on the government while pro-government pundits lambasted it.Although CNAC, Venezuela's autonomous film org, covered most of his $600,000 budget, Bellame has gotten scant promotional support. While shooting on location in the El Cementerio neighborhood, his crew was threatened by gang members. "We had to secure the permission of their leader in order to shoot there," says Bellame, who says he saw 13-year old boys toting guns openly in the barrio."People there are so used to violence that the shootout we staged didn't impress them at all," he says. He met several mothers whose sons were killed in gang wars.Spain's "Black Bread" by Agusti Villaronga, which made a sweep of the top Spanish film awards, the Goyas, is set in post-civil war Catalonia. However, its most controversial scene is not about the conflict, but one in which a horse is hit on the head and forced off a cliff."I can't even swat a fly!" says Villaronga, who explains that they used a frozen dead horse for some shots and no animals were harmed in the pic.Iran's Asghar Farhadi was two weeks into shooting his acclaimed family drama "A Separation" when he was ordered to stop. His offense? Making public remarks about the legal problems of some fellow filmmakers who have faced jail terms, house arrests and travel bans. But the film community and media reacted so strongly to this that the government backed off."In a way the authorities did me a favor as the hiatus gave me time to rehearse more with my actors," says Farhadi. "Asking me if I'm used to the political pressure in Iran is like asking a man living in a desert if the heat bothers him," he says wryly. "You just learn to cope with it."Brazilian helmer Jose Padilha experienced a similar twist of good fortune with his blockbuster "Elite Squad: The Enemy Within." Despite its critical and fact-based view of corruption and collusion between police, politicians as well as rampant drug trafficking in Brazil, the follow-up to Padilha's feature debut "Elite Squad" managed to dodge official condemnation."It was too popular," says Padilha of his drama, the highest-grossing Brazilian pic of all time. "The authorities chose to ignore it, as they would have looked bad otherwise," he adds, laughing.Padilha, whose portrayal of police brutality and corruption in the first "Elite Squad" had him fielding various lawsuits from police authorities, went on to say that "I'm a bit disappointed (the new film) didn't spark a controversy."It seems that humor and box office takings can sheild a film from possible government interference. In Lebanese entry "Where Do We Go Now," helmer Nadine Labaki's ostensibly female view of the Muslim-Christian conflict in her country managed to dodge controversy through humor, song and dance. It didn't hurt to top the local box office either. "Where Do We Go Now" is set to become the highest grossing pic in Lebanese box office history, outpacing "Titanic" and "Avatar."Eye on the Oscars: Foreign Language 2012 Where film is a risky biz | Hollywood coin in hot pursuit | Prestige outweighs kudos coin Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
